Year of 100 Portraits, Studio Portrait Photography
Year of 100 Portraits is an in studio portrait photography and editorial retouching passion project, exploring individuality and process through a personal lens.
The entirety of the project was produced and managed independently across four photography studios: Carousel's, Matka Studio, FD Studios, and Between Space Studio in Brooklyn, New York. On a typical shoot day, I had 10 to 14 model sessions, managing: outreach, coordination, styling, lighting, post-production, and expenses.
Each session aimed to capture two distinct styles of portraits: a black and white portrait, and a color portrait. The black and white portraits utilized hard, directional light to expose every detail of the face; the model always looks off camera and the background is always white. In contrast, the color portrait embraced softer light and served as an opportunity to experiment; the seamless was either neutral grey or a pop of color pulled from the models styling, creating a cohesive visual identity across the series.
